Grant Will Help Enrich the Lives of Coachella Valley Seniors

Five senior programs in the east valley will continue to operate at full capacity, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. The programs are 100% subsidized by Desert Recreation Foundation and were in danger of being reduced due to rising costs. However, the Coachella Valley Spotlight grant will support activities and programming at the community centers in Mecca, North Shore, Indio Hills, Thermal and Thousand Palms.

Operating for more than 70 years, Desert Recreation District currently manages and maintains more than 30 parks and recreation facilities in the area. Its fundraising arm, Desert Recreation Foundation, garners support to purchase, develop, enhance, preserve, promote and expand many of the Coachella Valley’s recreational activities, programs, parks, properties and facilities that enrich and preserve the quality of life for residents.

“The Coachella Valley Spotlight grant was awarded at a critical time,” said Tatiana Hinkle, Community Services Supervisor for Desert Recreation District. “Seniors rely on activities at their local community centers for food, socialization, recreation and other resources. Many valley residents will greatly benefit from this contribution.”

Desert Recreation District is the largest of its kind in the state. The District creates and delivers quality programs, services and classes as well as leisure opportunities through partnerships with private and public agencies and entities. Through the Coachella Valley Spotlight grant, senior residents will benefit from fitness, relaxation and revitalization activities.

“The social interaction for seniors at Desert Recreation District facilities is huge,” said Catharine Reed, Vice President of Charitable Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “But, adding food, fitness and other resources can be life-changing for seniors, who may not otherwise have access to many of these essentials.”

Desert Recreation Foundation works behind the scenes to ensure that all residents in the Coachella Valley have access to quality recreational resources, facilities, parks and programs that serve today’s needs and those for generations to come.

“The work of Desert Recreation Foundation, to support Desert Recreation District, is creating a stronger, healthier Coachella Valley,” said Jerry Upham, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates KESQ News Channel 3 and KPSP CBS Local 2.

Desert Recreation Foundation and Desert Recreation District were featured on News Channel 3’s “Eye on the Desert,” in public service announcements and on kesq.com throughout the month of December.
