Funding Supports Expansion of Recovery Program for Women

Soroptimist House of Hope (SHOH) received a $50,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation to support the nonprofit’s capital campaign for a new 4.75-acre recovery campus in Sky Valley. The peaceful, ranch-style property will be transformed into a 14-bed residential treatment center serving women recovering from substance use disorders.

The grant is part of SHOH’s effort to meet a required 10% match for a $5.2 million Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) grant awarded by the State of California. The organization has already raised more than half of the required match, and still needs to raise approximately $100,000 to fully leverage the state funding.

“This grant gives us a significant boost toward our fundraising goal,” said Nicole Yingling, Executive Director of SHOH. “We are so grateful to the Berger Foundation for recognizing the impact this new facility will have on women in our community. It’s more than a property, it will be a place of healing that will change people’s lives.”

Once the new property is renovated, SHOH plans to convert its existing Desert Hot Springs facility into a detox center, allowing for a full continuum of care across both locations. Since 1981, the nonprofit has helped thousands of women rebuild their lives through its residential treatment programs, counseling and support services.

“Soroptimist House of Hope is transforming this peaceful property into a safe, supportive space where women can reclaim their lives and begin again,” said Catharine Reed, Vice President of Charitable Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “We’re proud to help make that vision a reality.”

“This is exactly the type of community effort that we like to recognize through the Impact Grant program,” said Jerry Upham, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates KESQ News Channel 3.

The Berger Foundation presents Impact Grants through a partnership with News Channel 3. Representatives from both entities look for local 501(c)3 nonprofits to recognize for their outstanding work to improve people’s lives and help those in need. Impact Grants are awarded on the concept that through service, funding, and awareness, we are “Making a Difference Together.” Beyond the funds, each organization also receives media coverage about its mission across a variety of News Channel 3’s platforms, including News Channel 3 News at 4 and kesq.com.
